What I Wish I’d Known Earlier on the Path to Tenure:
Recently Promoted Faculty Speak
These reflections are intended to offer a broad range of individual perspectives and
advice on the tenure/promotion process at UCI. Official criteria for tenure/promotion
review are described in the UC Academic Personnel Manual (APM) and the UCI Academic
Personnel Procedures (APP). UCI Academic Personnel also provides guidance to all aspects
of the Academic Personnel Review process for faculty at https://ap.uci.edu/faculty/guidance/. Please read the Guidance carefully. In no case do the commentaries offered here
supersede requirements or processes detailed in the APM and/or APP, which are always
the ‘final word’ on all things related to tenure and promotion. If you are confused
about how anything in these reflections aligns with APM/APP guidance, or want additional
clarification on any aspect of the tenure/promotion process, please consult your chair,
the School of Social Sciences Equity Advisor, the Associate Dean or Vice Associate
Dean for Faculty Development and Diversity, and/or the Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Development in the office of Academic Personnel.
